Have you ever thought before about dyslexia?
Have you ever thought what does seem like to have a dyslexic student in your class?
Have you ever thought of ways that would help you as a teacher to teach and deal with dyslexic student?
In fact, these questions were my concern for the past two years while teaching grades four and five, since I used to have a dyslexic student. First of all I'd like to share with you what is meant by "DYSLEXIA": it is a disorder in children who, despite conventional classroom experience, fail to attain the language skills of reading, writing, and spelling commensurate with their intellectual abilities.
At the beginning, I didn't know that this student had dyslexia because I didn't know what is dyslexia before; and unfortunately the school didn't inform me about the problem that this student had, and they didn't tell me how to deal with such a case. This student faced terrible problems in reading, writing, and even spelling a lot of simple words, but he had a very good speaking skill and he was able to express a lot of things perfectly but orally.
After it was late, I was informed that this student is dyslexic and needs special attention and care but HOW??? they never explained what some ways that I could use to help this student overcome his problem, knowing that it is very had to overcome. The coordinator told me that whatever we teach and give for the students it must be reduced for this dyslexic student, and the exams that are given to him must have less questions but they were the same level of questions given to normal students which was unfair. But what I have noticed that this student liked horses a lot, and whenever we encounter a lesson that talks about horses or have anything about country side I would notice that he paying attention, participating, and even understanding. So I started to design activities and exams based on different topics that he likes, and what I have noticed is that his level of motivation and achievement have improved to the better. Also we have worked together with his parents who were very helpful and they used to take him to a specialist who also worked with us and helped me as a teacher to design exams that suit his level.
Being dyslexic doesn't mean that the student is a low achiever or unable to succeed just like any other normal person wanting to succeed and shine in any domain. A lot of famous people are dyslexic but they were considered geniuses and famous in different domains. Some famous people who suffer or suffered from dyslexia are: Tom Cruise, Alexander Graham Bell, Albert Einstein, Orlando Bloom and many others.
